The Little Things

This morning as I was working out, I began to daydream about the future and about my future position. As I thought about the possibilities, it motivated me to push through another set, slay another 20 reps and focus on the quality of each movement my body makes. The more I let my imagination wander, the more my instinctual critical thinking takes over. And then I let the little things set in...

I always say, it's the little things that matter. Ants make or break a picnic. So here's my picnic. What about the commute? I've commuted 120 miles roundtrip daily for the last 2 years. Easy peasy. What about the culture? I do my best work in a high-performing and fast-paced environment where communication is transparent but kind. Where people hold each other accountable but have an innate sense of individual responsibility. Where creativity abounds and innovation is celebrated. And where career growth is a thing. A real thing. Where politics are reserved for Facebook. Not the office.

What about pay? Everyone says it's not about money. Yes, it most certainly is. It's always about money. And benefits. And work/life integration. And the mission. And leadership. I must remember to be brave. I know my value, I know what I have done for companies in the past and I know what I'm capable of doing in the future.

The little things matter. But in the end, it's about taking care of myself. Taking care of my family. Taking care of the people I am given responsibility for developing. Taking care of business priorities. It's about showing up. It's about focusing on the quality of my efforts daily. I'm excited by the future. Excited for new beginnings. But most importantly, I'm excited for my next challenge. Bring it on 2020! I got this.
